How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician teaches how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is located at the edge of transmission just above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to connect the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can trigger spark and injectors accordingly.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This means that the Crank Shaft is not in alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate an issue with the chain or a jump in the chain link of the upper timing chain. However, the error code won't appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing can be a bit difficult as there are two different pins for the connector and they have different functions but the most effective way to test it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is fully functional, it should read approximately 1000 ohms. If you're experiencing issues with this part, check for signs of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when accelerating from highway paytoll at a high speed I noticed a significant decrease in power. It was as if the engine was running out of gas. Or, my injectors were not firing. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were soaked in gasoline, and the fourth was dry. I put tissue over each hole in the injector and when I start the engine with no sparks, the ones that have gazoline pop right out. The 4th one remains shut. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I got 0ohm. I assume that the problem is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car can start if the G28 is unplugged and runs fine when it is plugged in but it still is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even if it is not plugged in, shows temperatures of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars while the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not sure what to do, but i feel audi a4 spare key i have pretty much completely ruled out all other possibilities. But i'm worried that I might have missed something. Please let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal sent by the RPM sensor. The GM-style sensor is identical to the G4 and both function in the 80, 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you audi a4 spare key can easily locate one at a salvage yard or from a parts store. 4. ECU

If you are experiencing issues with either one of these, the diagnostic scanner will show codes that could lead to the engine shutting down.

A damaged G28 sensor could result in an inaccurate speed counter for your gearbox or a gearbox that shifts faster than normal, and/or a misfire while in gear. If you experience any of these issues it is likely your sensor is going bad and needs replacing. The good news is they are very cheap and easily accessible particularly in the case of a Bosch model, which is what ours are. 5. Tachometer

A damaged engine sensor could cause a myriad of issues within your vehicle.
